Stranger in Town

After reviewing the many images of the Sturgis motorcycle rally to consider for my first-ever Sturgis commemorative, I decided to draw from my own experiences. Every year I do the rally, I invariably end up riding up the canyon to Deadwood, for dinner or a meeting. I am always struck by how pleasant the ride is, then arriving at this little mountain town is always a visual delight. I have recently been exposed to a bit of history from this place, and rich would be an understatement. Seth Bullock rode to town the day before Wild Bill Hickock’s fatal shooting. After witnessing the lawlessness of the camp, he became Deadwood’s first sheriff, competing with the likes of Mr. Wyatt Earp. He then built the Bullock hotel with his partner Sol Star in 1895, and to this day, it is said to be haunted by his ghost. My painting reflects a time some 15 years later. As Seth plays cards on the boardwalk, he is about to witness one the first of the iron horses to roam onto the streets of Deadwood. The sight and sound of this silent grey fellow would have been a very strange encounter indeed.
